Hi Birders,
I am surprised that Crompton (doesn't he have a first name?) says that the
field guides did not show that barring on the breast was part of the
breeding plumage of both the Grey-tailed and the Wandering Tattler.
I checked on my trusty Slaters Field Guide and sure enough, the breeding
plumage of both species is shown with barring on the breast! So does
Morcombe's Field Guide. Whereas Simpson & Day, did not illustrate the
barring on the breast for either species. However in the text of that Field
Guide, if you know where to look, there are a few words to say that the
breast is barred on birds in breeding plumage. So I can understand Compton's
dilemma!
At this time of the year the breast barring in Tattlers is most obvious and
beautiful.
