I've just returned from Norfolk Island to see my 700th bird. John Reidy
was there the week before and I saw him as he was leaving.
I won't go into a lot of detail as there are excellent comprehensive
reports available on the archives, suffice to say my wife and I had a
fantastic time. Norfolk Island is a really interesting place from a
historical, cultural and birding perspective.
Birding highlights were:
The three endemics- Red-crowned Parakeet (2 seen around the aviary on
different occasions), Grey Warbler (everywhere) and
Slender-billed White-eye (Mt Pitt, Botanical Gardens and Cooks
Monument).
I managed to get out on a fishing trip and although we only went out 7
nm, I still recorded Providence Petrel, Black-winged Petrel,
Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Wilson's Storm Petrel, Masked Booby and Little
Shearwater. The number of fish caught in 3 hours was astounding and 3
largish Bronze Whalers circling the boat was interesting.
The highlight of our trip was the excursion to Philip Island. Dave Bigg
(phone 23514) now runs these trips and he is a first class boatman. We
had close up views on the Island of Red-tailed Tropicbird, Black Noddy,
Sooty Tern, Black-winged Petrel, a Kermadec Petrel right beside the
track and Providence Petrel chicks in Owen Evan's "hut".
I had about 7-8 sightings of Little Shearwater between Norfolk and
Philip Islands. John didn't see any Little Shearwater the week before so
they have obviously just turned up. Dainty Grey Ternlets at the base of
the cliffs was another highlight.
It was interesting that neither John nor I saw Song Thrush which is
supposed to be common.
Norfolk is highly recommended destination both from a birding viewpoint
but also in terms of great place to holiday.
