Hello birders

A cassowary update courtesy of Adrian Walker of "Wild Things" at Mission Beach.

A public meeting was recently held with QNPWS. There is no confirmation that
Cyclone Larry has killed any adult Cassowaries, although 3 chicks (in brown
plumage) were killed on the roads shortly after.

People are being urged not to feed the Cassowaries as QNPWS are leaving fruit
out for them in the forest away from human habitation. This feeding programme
may go on for 4 to 5 months.

Questions are being posed as to whether the cyclone has affected or will affect
the breeding cycle. Will the male Cassowaries allow their chicks to follow
them for a longer time period before chasing them off (there is some anecdotal
evidence that this is occurring)? Will the females come into their normal
breeding behaviour (or will lack of food delay this)?

Good birding!
Andrew
