Just a comment on Lawrie's note about Otway (sw Victoria) and alpine area Olive-backed Orioles.

His comment regarding the quotes from the old (1987) Atlas of Victorian Birds is correct but current Atlas of Victorian Wildlife data certainly supports recent observations of the species being recorded from the Otways and over a large part of the alpine area as well.

Of course I should have referred to something slightly later than 1987!  I could have answered my own question ...

There are 5,315 records of Olive-backed Orioles in the Atlas of Victorian Wildlife version available publicly (data to about May 2004) - of which for those with altitude recorded there are just 54 records from above 800m ASL in Victoria, or about 1%.  Of those, the 100m interval totals are like so:

800-900m       20
900-1000       19
1,000-1,100       10
1,100-1,200       3
1,200-1,300       0
1,300-1,400       2

No other records from above 1,500m (eg. my recent Dinner Plain sighting).  Many of the records from the Alps region are in fact from the valleys, and are not even sub-alpine in altitude.
