Birds is correct but current Atlas of Victorian Wildlife data certainly
supports recent observations of the species being recorded from the
Otways and over a large part of the alpine area as well.
Of course I should have referred to something slightly later than
1987! I could have answered my own question ...
There are 5,315 records of Olive-backed Orioles in the Atlas of
Victorian Wildlife version available publicly (data to about May 2004)
- of which for those with altitude recorded there are just 54 records
from above 800m ASL in Victoria, or about 1%. Of those, the 100m
interval totals are like so:
800-900m 20
900-1000 19
1,000-1,100 10
1,100-1,200 3
1,200-1,300 0
1,300-1,400 2
No other records from above 1,500m (eg. my recent Dinner Plain
sighting). Many of the records from the Alps region are in fact from
the valleys, and are not even sub-alpine in altitude.
