Many thanks to those who offered suggestions as to this species' ID. I finally got a recording and played it to some local experts. All agreed that it is one of the less common calls of the Crested Shrike-tit.

Greetings. I participate in the Canbera Ornithologists Groups' Woodland Survey. In grassy box woodland near Canberra during the Sept survey I heard a very distinctive call that I could not identify. I described it thus: fairly slow, far-carrying, ventriloquial in that it was hard to work out where it was coming from, evenly spaced notes on a fairly even pitch:
  oo-wa-chew-chew or wa-wa-chew-chew

I conducted the Dec survey today. Same call, same location. Today I noted it as
   too-wer, choo-choo, repeated a couple of times

I've listened to taped calls of some possible species sans success. Any sugestions as to the bird's identity? Very frustrating!
