Thanks to you all for your responses. So helpful! Drew In America even offered to buy & send me a second-hand copy from there. Peter had the same result on dogberts that I'd had on various internet searches -- incredible price range, various editions unspecified, & lots of offers that are very blurry on the state of the book. One of the frustrating things I discovered is that there's to be a new edition, but it won't come out even in the USA until well into next year.
So. In the end I've taken Bob Green's advice to heart -- and decided to lash out & buy Gill's Ornithology NEW. Scary, but now I'll look forward to years of textbook pleasure!

Thanks all again. Happy xmas.
Judith.
