Hello all,
After the recent report by John Turner of a juvenile Little Tern at the
Torrens River outlet, I went down yesterday evening -sorry I couldn't report
this earlier- and managed to observe the said bird. Indeed, everything
appears to point to it being a juvenile of that species. And that was the
same conclusion two other observers there came to. Only problem is the dogs
and people walking obliviously through the middle of the mixed flock.
An abundance of nutrients must be being flushed out to sea there at the
moment, with fish taking advantage of this and gulls and terns in turn
taking advantage of the fish.
Quite a humerous sight greeted our eyes when the three of us were making our
way back towards the bridge. And old guy was sat there fishing, with an
Australian Pelican either side of him -no more than a metre away in both
instances, a great egret another metre away to his right and a cheeky
white-faced heron under his left armpit, dipping its beak into what appeared
to be his bucket of bait. The old boy did not seem the least concerned, and
I mentioned to one of the guys there that he probably catches no fish and
just goes down there to feed all his bait to the herons, egrets and
pelicans, if they don't snatch it from under his nose in the meantime. Quite
clearly this man had spent many hours sitting in this position, in this
pursuit of becalming his avian friends. Who knows, his goal right from the
very beginning may have been to do this. Brilliant!!!
Regards,
Michael
