Hi all,
On July 23 Karen from Victoria advised Birding-aus
of a website that provides advice on which trees to plant to provide habitat for
birds and other fauna. On the surface this seemed like a good idea but
when I visited the site and entered my details such as geographical area,
species to be attracted etc. I was advised to plant a South Australian eucalypt,
a non-local bottlebrush etc. for a site in Northern New South Wales. I
don't know how long it will take for the message that the best plants for
local fauna species are local species grown from local seed to filter through to
bodies like the owners of the website. Local fauna species are adapted to
the local plants and only the most adaptable, and therefore common, species are
likely to take to 'foreign' plants while the rarer species get rarer. It
is also a worry that this website has been funded by NHT. Karen also
checked the site and decided against following the advice given for similar
reasons to mine.
