Hi ,
Some interesting birds seen on a trip to Birdsville & Innamincka
from May 10 -16th were :
Pink-eared Duck - Mungeranie & Birdsville
Blue Bonnet - Cooper Creek on Birdsville Track
Red-kneeded Dotterel - most patches of water up & down the Tracks
Red-necked Avocet - Birdsville
Royal Spoonbill - Birdsville
Yellow Spoonbill - Innamincka
Barking Owl - Innamincka
Mallee Ringneck - Innamincka, very intense light greens and yellow
Orange Chat - Montecollina Bore ( MB ), great excitement here , a new
tick for me
Chestnut-rumped Heathwren - MB, Maybe Shy Heathwren ? , only had
fleeting views in amongst Samphire
White-backed swallow - MB
Australian Crake - MB
Stubble Quail - MB
A huge irruption of Black-tailed Native Hens 40kms east of
Birdsville on a patch of water by the roadside ( 400-500 ), the ground
was black with them in a very small area.
Lastly, an interesting sighting of a large solitary heron at
Birdsville. It was 2/3 - 3/4 the size of a Brolga, grey all over with a
very light grey/ brownish long neck with a heavy large dark bill and
long grey stout legs. Its wings were large dark grey-blue with white
spots at the carpel joints. It appeared larger than the Great-billed
heron, although similar. It was not a juvenile Black-necked stork nor a
White-necked heron. Any thoughts ? It was out in full view fishing
a shallow lagoon.
Cheers,
Peter.
