Hi Peter,

It is actually not that uncommon to see herons catch small mammals. In europe you often see Grey herons hunting in fields. They often catch mice and also moles. As cattle egrets catch any small animal that is disturbed by the cows, I'm not surprised to see it flew of with a mouse. You would have the most chance of seeing this behaviour in Cattle egrets, more then in most other herons as it mainly hunts on dry land.
