Hi,
For those who plan to stop over in KL within this
month or next for a day trip should consider visiting
Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) situated
in the northern fringe of metropolitan KL.
There is actually nothing really worth visiting except
for a lone juvenile Masked Finfoot (Heliopais
personata) which has wintered there since November
2004 and was still around 2 weeks ago from resources
in Malaysia. It has been seen by almost every birders
in the country.
I will provide details in private email. The journey
to the site can be done by 45 mins taxi from city
centre (taxi fare is very cheap by Australian
standard), get off and walk for 50 meters to a pond
and you will very likely be rewarded by this very
obliging rarity. I know a few other aussie birders who
had seen it without spending big effort.
