Hi Birders,
On the same day that Carol Probets was noting that the Yellow-faced
Honeyeater migration had commenced through Katoomba (on 1/4/05), the Central
Coast Group of Birding NSW were holding a camp-out in the Bathurst District
led by John & Rowena Wallace.
On 1/4/05 our 20 or so birders were in the area of the Bridle Track from
Eglinton to Hill End, and at the very first stop, at Winburndale Riverlet
bridge, Yellow-faced Honeyeaters were passing over in small migratory
flocks. Silvereyes and Noisy Friarbirds were also on the move. Throughout
the next few days in the Sofala, Turondale, Sunny Cortner & Winburndale
areas, all three species were seen to be on the move. Not in large flocks
but passing through in small numbers, never the less. There were few trees
in blossom, Yellow Box was the most obvious flowering eucalypt but not in
any great numbers.
No Swifties or Regent Honeyeaters were heard or seen.
However, there were other good birds to see viz 4 Wedge-tailed Eagles along
the Bridle Track along with Brown Treecreepers, Restless Flycatchers and
Diamond Firetails and at other areas around Turondale; Flame Robins at Dark
Corner; Scarlet Robins in the pine forest at Sunny Corner as well as 2
Bassian Thrushes; Spotted Quail-thrushes at Winburndale NR & in the pines at
nearby Sunny Corner SF.
There was a late Rainbow Bee-eater and the only Fan-tailed Cuckoo at Caves
Hole Res, Bruimbin, while White-throated and Western Gerygones were located
at a number of places. Speckled Warblers were seen near Limekilns and a
Black-eared Cuckoo in Winburndale NR. A call at the dam on Karoo HSD Meadow
Flat (can be seen from the road) revealed 2 Freckled Duck, 3 Blue-billed
Duck and 6 Australian Shovelers and many Hoary-headed Grebe. The Camp-out
was still going when Anne and I left on Sunday afternoon so that the full
bird list is not known at this stage.
