      Good morning All,
On Good Friday at about 9.30am I saw a
single Franklin's Gull in breeding plumage flying purposefully north along
the surfline at Avoca Beach, about 15m away. It had an all black hood, red
bill, white eye-ring, darkish grey wings distinctly outlined by the white
trailing edge which extended forward inside the black wing-tips. White
tail.. I got the bins onto it as it flew away and disappeared toward the
headland at North Avoca. It was alone and unmistakable.
There was a southerly blowing, with a
black CB storm moving north offshore and intermittent drizzle.
As well there were Silver Gulls, a few
Crested Terns most of them juvenile, flying around and sitting on the beach,
and two Australian Gannets, one juvenile were visible off the beach, a
Pelican and six Black Swans over the lagoon.
                                     The bird was presumably migrating
north, and could be picked up by birders anywhere up to Cairns over the next
week or two.

Cheers

Michael
