I am intrigued by this atatement regarding Spotted Turtle-dove:
"Another species we don't want, especially as the Crested Pigeon is becoming
establishing a toehold in a few sw Vic localities."
The only reason Crested Pigeons are becoming established is because of the
disturbance provided by humans. I assum like in NSW this species is
expanding its range into urban areas because there is a much more open
habitat provided. Just because the Crested Pigeon is native, doesn't mean it
should be encouraged to spread its range. Other species may be outcompeted
just as much by Crested Pigeons as Spotted Turtle-doves.
In Sydney I reckon both are restricted to disturbed areas, and if native
vegetation was ever restored, both would disappear.
Maybe I am wrong and Spotted Turtle-Doves inhabit "natural" environments
more readily in Victoria, but I don't think either of these species would
have existed in SW Victoria prior to European settlement.
Cheers,
Peter
