I have not heard the Channel-billed Cuckoo calling in my area in Seven
Hills (40 km west of Sydney CBD) for the past few weeks and that may
indicate that they have left also. However, several Koels are still
calling quite loud in my area, especially in the evening and early
morning. They have departed as late as mid April in my area. Last
Thursday, I saw a baby Koel in the Seven Hills shopping centre car park
constantly begging for food to its Red Wattlebird parents (I wish I had
my camera).

It is a bit more difficult to determine when the summer migrants
actually
leave until you finally realise that they are no longer calling. I
reckon
the Channel-billed Cuckoos have left this area (Toronto on Lake
Macquarie)-
maybe a week ago now. Koel and Dollar Birds are still here.
On the subject of the Koel, I saw a male flying (guiltily) away from my
cherry tomato patch the other day and it had a brown feather down either
side of its tail which none of my books show as a variation- although I
don't have the relevant HANZAB volume yet.
For the local recorder- I've just spotted a Pacific Baza in the trees
near
my house (Bolton Point). I used my xlnt Nikon10x42 Monarchs and at 70m
could
not only see the yellow eye but also the black iris.
