Dear all,
I'm going to take a non-birding visitor to Wilson's Prom over the weekend,
and would like to inquire whether anyone knows some good spots for Beautiful
Firetail and Chestnut-rumped Heathwren. I didn't find any specific
information in the archives, and when I last visited in August, I missed
both these species despite an extensive weekend search.
Also, in August I didn't find Ground Parrot despite two dawn vigils and two
evenings at the most promising heath area around the dried-out lake. Are
they still present in Wilson's Prom, and is there a way to see them? Where
else in the "Greater Melbourne Area" is there a publicly accessible spot to
see them?
On a different note, I would be very glad if someone was willing to share
information about reliable sites to find the following species as close to
Melbourne as possible:
- Speckled Warbler: I have tried for the warbler in the You Yangs many times
now, but I have received different information from various birdwatchers
that they are either locally extinct now or very reclusive and hard to find.
- Painted Buttonquail: Apparently in the You Yangs (and recently sighted
there) but all my previous searches proved fruitless... Where is the best
area? What time of day?
- Painted Honeyeater: I have previously searched for this species in
Kingower - to no avail.
- Chestnut-rumped Heathwren: Where around MLB?
I will let the list know of the outcome of my weekend trip to Wilson's Prom
in case I see something remarkable. Thanks beforeheand to anyone who's
