What you report is what struck me when I first came to Australia in 1983 and heard Blackbirds singing in the Sydney Botanic Gdns - their songs commenced in typical UK Blackbird form, and then went "all wrong" - so I guessed that with few Blackbirds around to copy from, they were trying out alternatives and taking on the Oz accent.
