2004 Rufous Scrub-bird Surveys

Volunteers - we need your help!

Why a survey?

Since 1999, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has conducted surveys for the Rufous Scrub-bird (Atrichornis rufescens) in north-east NSW.  The surveys have been part of a long term (5-year) monitoring program designed to assess the abundance of the species in the World Heritage National Parks of north-eastern NSW.  This results of this work have been documented in recent published works such as HANZAB (Vol 5), The Action Plan for Australian Birds (2000), The New Atlas of Australian Birds (2003) and The State of Australia?s Birds Report (2003).

Following the success of the surveys over the past four years, this years surveys are about to commence.  Ekerlogic Consulting Services (ECS) is sponsored by the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife (FNPW) Threatened Species Appeal to undertake this years surveys in the Barrington Tops and Border Ranges National Parks.  At this stage, surveys may also occur in Gibralter Range, New England and Lamington (QLD) National Parks.

The surveys are a great opportunity for you to assist in the conservation of this rare and cryptic species in some of the most beautiful World Heritage rainforests of the east coast of NSW. Also a great opportunity to camp out and see some of the rarer rainforest birds, mammals and plants that occur in those regions.
