How do you regular overseas book buyers get around that ?

When buying from the good 'ol US of A, ask them to send it Global Priority Direct (GPD) rather than Airmail. It costs a bit less than half the price, and is either about the same or quicker in getting here. Some booksellers are more savvy about this than others.

I recently ordered a 'hard to get' book on the Brazilian early republic period from a shop in New Hampshire via the 'net broker Abebooks. Abebooks only offered an expensive airmail option (about the same as the book price), but the bookseller himself suggested GPD without even being asked to do so. I ended up paying $AUD42 for a $US20 book plus $US9 GPD, and considering what a nice copy it was, of a book not available in Australia, I consider it rather a bargain.
