Hi Birders,
Kim Sterelny asked for infomation about birding sites near Wellington NSW so
here are a few ideas.
1 Mount Arthur Reserve c. 10 km south of Wellington. Dry schlerophyll forest
dominated by White Box and Cypress Pine. Good for Speckled Warblers,
Turquoise Parrots, White-browed Babbers, Brown-headed & Black-chinned
Honeyeaters etc
2 Burrendong Dam Arboreatum c. 20 km NW of Wellington. Plenty of Yellow Box
and White Box with plantings of Eremophilas & Grevilleas etc. Good for
Double-barred, Red-browed & Diamond Firetail Finches, Hooded, Yellow &
Red-capped Robins, Rufous & Gilbert's Whistler and Golden Whistlers in
winter, Turquoise Parrots, Brown Treecreepers, Grey-crowned Babblers etc
3 Ball Hill Reserve, Geurie. c30 km W of Wellington & 1 km south of the
town. Look for Painted Button-quail, White-plumed & Fuscous Honeyeater,
White-browed Babbler, Noisy & Little Friarbird, Spotted & Striated
Pardalotes, Rufous, Gilbert's & Golden Whistler, Brown Treecreeper etc
4 Travelling Stock Reserves on the Wellington-Goolma-Mudgee Road. Good for
Brown Treecreepers, Grey-crowned Babblers and Diamond Firetails
All these sites are potenially suitable for Regent Honeyeaters and Swift
Parrots if the White Box/Yellow Box is in flower and there is nectat present
in the blossum!
Kim, less us know how you get on!
