Tips for Beginners

Sorry to keep sending this - trying to get it through without major domo. Thanks to everyone so far that is given hints.

Will try this again.

I am thinking about running a course at the local community college as an 
introduction to bird-watching. I will probably run it as a couple of hours 
in the evening on basics, then a couple of sunday mornings in the local 
national parks to give some practice to the theory.

I have two questions for everyone.
1. Has anyone ever run/participated in such a course? If so what worked, 
what didn't and what did you achieve from the course. I think I have most of 
the basics covered, but if anyone has any likely things that get missed they 
would be appreciated.

2. What is the best tip that you have been given when you started or what is 
a tip that you give to new birders? I generally say once you are over the 
basics then learning calls makes the process much easier, because you can 
eliminate all the common species and target the calls you don't recognise. 
Any other such tips would be greatly appreciated.
