Hello fellow travellers,

A brief note about an issue we are all familiar with: residential developments
and their impact/s on habitat.

I have some serious concerns about a proposed development at Buttaba, in the
Lake Macquarie area of New South Wales. The particular parcel of privately
owned land represents one of the few relatively intact pieces of bushland
adjacent to or near the lake line. Though somewhat limited in size, the parcel
of bushland subject to the proposed residential subdivision features a number
of very large, very old eucalypts of various species (smooth barked apple the
size of whales, stringly bark and scribbly gum riddled with hollows etc!!)which
consistute prime habitat for a range of wildlife, including I suspect a number
of threatened raptors (Powerful Owls, for instance, given the significant
densities of prey animals - possums, gliders and the like - occupying hollows).
The area is adjacent to tracts of dry schlerophyll forest extending west, away
from the lake environs, but which has been subject to many habitat-destructive
activities over the years (including mining, trailbike activity etc). My
concern is that the pocket of land subject to the development threat at Buttaba
may represent an important nesting and roosting site - given the many large old
trees at the spot - sustaining a Powerful Owl presence in the area. I don't
think this has been properly considered by interested parties to the
development.

I'm hoping to generate some publicity about the issue, and am also wondering if
there are some locals of the area who are subscribers to this list who may
share my concerns. Feel free to email me about the topic.

Thanks

Craig Williams
