Carol and all,
You may like to have a look at http://www.eremaea.com/
This is an Australian designed internet based birding software programme ,so
the software isn't stored on your personal computer. It is global and very
versatile in what you can do with your data. It also pools data allowing
info to be shared (a good idea although some sensitive info might be kept
off it if required). If you were to enter a couple of bird lists a week
through a year your costs would be 25 dollars approx apparently. Downloading
past data could take a while, personally I greatly enjoyed going back through
my old battered notebooks ,reliving many good times!
Regards Simon Starr
PS I've no interests in this programme.
