BAYBOCA (the Bayside Branch of the Bird Observers Club of Australia) had
an outing to Mud Islands, Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, yesterday.
Conditions were just about perfect with high tide at The Heads around 2
pm which meant that the waders were flying in to roost at Mud Islands
after lunch. The full bird list is attached but highlights were a
White-faced Storm-Petrel seen whilst approaching Mud Islands, Greater
and Lesser Sand Plover, Double-banded Plover, 30+ Grey Plover, 100+
Bar-tailed Godwit, large numbers of Great and Red Knot, a single
Sanderling, and a Fluttering Shearwater seen on the trip back to
Portsea. Many of the waders were coming into breeding plumage,
providing a great opportunity to compare breeding and non-breeding
plumages.
