Thanks for the responses of Red-kneed Dotterel, Black-winged Stilt, Red-necked Avocet
I have now showed my friend Slater and
S&D
On further questioning he added
- beak a little bit longer than head
- beak darkish.
- back grey with small "triangles"
So here is the new list of
"clues"
- Size & build of Masked Lapwing (he called it
a Plover)
- Back Grey with small diamond
mottling
- Legs, red
- Beak, upturned (a little bit longer than
head )
- black stripe on side of wing
- birds were approachable to within 4 metres
Terek Sandpiper is a possibility, although smaller than a
Lapwing ?
and was recorded here by Peter Harris, a well known earlier Mount
Isan.
Slater (p128) says -
- Upturned Beak
- Orange-yellow legs
- Black stripes on shoulder

Shorebirds by Hayman, Marchant & Prater
