Also, though it's not as humorous, try Mark Cocker's paperback book, called (I think) 'Birders'. Roughly the same place and same period as Oddie, with some nice eye-openers.

...a good starting point would be "Bill Oddie's Little Black Bird
Book" with several particularly pertinent chapters
