Mike and others,
DNA cannot answer all the questions at the subspecies level. While it can
certainly help decide whether we are dealing with different species or
different subspecies, it is not uncommon that the genetic distance between
subspecies in a particular gene is 0.0000%. There must presumably be some
difference somewhere in the genome, but in such cases you cannot easily tell
the difference between individuals of the same subspecies, and individuals
of different subspecies.
