Dear Birding-ausers,

Apologies if you've already received a message about this petition. If not,
please read on...

John Ridgway, a famous sailor, is currently sailing around the Southern
Ocean to raise awareness of the terrible plight of the world's albatrosses
and other seabirds which are facing extinction largely because of a fishing
technique called 'longlining'.

Every species of albatross is at risk.

Many of the longline fishing vessels operate illegally - the so-called
'Pirates'. They are responsible for needlessly killing tens of thousands of
albatrosses and other seabirds every year.

A petition has been launched in association with Ridgway's voyage, supported
by a variety of organisations, that calls upon nations to tackle the problem
of 'pirate fishing'.

The petition will be presented to the United Nations in June 2004.

I urge everyone on this list who cares about the world's albatrosses to sign
the petition and to ask their friends to do so. You can find out more about
Ridgway's voyage, the longlining problem and can sign the petition at:

or visit the BirdLife website at:

Many thanks for your time and support.

Best wishes
Richard
