Dear everybody, another backyard hobby story. While our children were playing
at
Clarke Reserve, Padstow, last Saturday 25/7/03 at about midday, an Australian
Hobby swept low over the netball courts and gobbled up a starling... Well,
that's a
bit of hyperbole. It killed the poor bugger and flew off with it. Padstow is
deep in
the southern suburbs of Sydney, although the park is only about 500m as the
raptor flies from the wildlife corridor of Salt Pan Creek.

We also saw one perched on a fence watching the equestrian leg of the Men's
Modern Pentathlon at the Sydney 2000 Olympics (Olympic Baseball Stadium at
Homebush).

P.S. The following raptors have visited our own semi-rural backyard at North
Richmond in the Hawkesbury. Although it contains a Hills Hoist, metal swings
and a cubby-house, it doesn't really count as a suburban back-yard. A couple of
days ago, a low-flying wedge-tailed eagle took an unhealthy interest in my wife,
the washing line and the neighbours' chooks before being chased off by some
ravens.
Osprey, Wedge-Tailed Eagle, W-B Sea Eagle (nesting), Little Eagle, Brown
Goshawk, Collared Sparrowhawk, Grey Goshawk, Square-Tailed Kite, Whistling
Kite, Peregrine Falcon, Australian Hobby, Black Falcon, Pacific Baza, Nankeen
Kestrel, Black-Shouldered Kite, Brown Falcon, Swamp Harrier, Spotted Harrier

Cheers, David Potter
