1). Surprising birdwatchers Sandman and Rove Macmannis
Another surprise like Rove's interest (see mail below) is the TV clown-personality "Sandman" (Stephen Abbott).
Stephen was guest personality at his home today on ABC Sydney radio, interviewed for his real self - favourite music etc.
He spoke of his passion for "birdwatching". He spoke seriously of and mentioned his fondness for the birds in his local patch:
e.g. superb fairywrens,white-faced herons and particularly the honeyeaters.
He went on to say that he didn't know why he loves birdwatching so much, but he just does.
2). Surprising Sydney suburban birds this year
At my home here in densely populated suburban Caringbah, on the southern shores of Botany Bay, I am getting several species in my own and neighbours trees, which were not evident before (at least over the last 5 yrs), and am wondering whether it's due directly or indirectly to loss of usual habitat in the region to bushfires:
The King parrots were not to be found anywhere in Caringbah previously, but the Spinebills and Musk Lorikeets were abundant in local parks on previous years.
Also spotted pardalottes and crimson rosellas appear to be more frequent and abundant visitors than previously.
Furthermore, a whistling kite has become a regular fly-over around mid-afternoon.
