Folks,

On a few occasions in recent years my parents, living in Glen Iris (Melbourne suburb about 10 km SE of CBD), have heard what they have asumed to be an Owlet-Nightjar, based on the call descriptions in the standard field guides such as SImpson & Day and, more recently, Morcombe - a strongish churring call.  There is reasonable habitat in the area - remnant red gum woodland along local creeks and lots of big trees in gardens, so on that basis it doesn't seem unreasonable.  On last Friday night they heard the calls again, a bit after 11 pm, but there seemed to be several individuals calling and circling - possibly up to a dozen or so.  This sort of flocking doesn't seem like standard Owlet-Nightjar behaviour to me.  Can anybody offer any suggestions?

Regards,

    Jack
