This was very apparent during the worst of the Canberra bushfires.
The weather radar showed what looked like possible thunderstorms or
rain with the weather change, but it was just the plumes of smoke,
leaves, twigs etc. - not a drop of rain.

I've just noticed that there is a radar archive page at:
   http://www.bom.gov.au/nmoc/archives/Radar/
Unfortunately, Canberra is just a speck on this map, but the smoke/debris
plumes are visible from 03:00UTC (2pm local) to 08:00 UTC (7pm local) on
18 January 2003.
