A goat-like animal, the Himalayan Tahr, has been introduced to the alpine areas of New Zealand. It is causing great damage to the alpine vegetation. The New Zealand National Parks people want to reduce the numbers to 10000. The New Zealand hunting fraternity object to this. Anonymous letters were sent to various authorities threatening to release possums back on to Kapati Island and stoats to Codfish Island in revenge. There is no sign that the releases were carried out but conservationists were worried.
