Investigating an unusual call from my back garden in Reynella, a southern suburb of Adelaide, the other evening, I discovered a pair of Crested Shrike-tits calling from the Silky Oak tree.  They were close enough for me to have a very good look at them without even using binoculars.  As I'd never seen this species before, I had to check my birdbooks to ID them.
So, they were a first, for not only my garden, but for me as well.  An excellent start to my New Year!
And with the first 2 weeks of February to be spent on Kangaroo Island in a lovely house with acres of bush behind and overlooking Pelican Lagoon, it's going to get even better.
