Mike Tarburton touches on the conservation aspects of Little Bitterns.

In Victoria the sepcies is listed as a threatened taxon under the Floraa nd
Fauna Guarantree Act. The evidence supplied which lead to its listing are
as follows:

"Alteration of natural flooding regimes and the associated lack of
suitable nesting habitat means there is a continuing decline in breeding
opportunities for Little Bitterns in Victoria. The destruction of
wetland habitat is a major factor in the decline of the species in the
  state."

"There are only seven breeding records of Little Bittern in Victoria since
1970. The reporting rate for the species has declined in the last 10 years
and is now only 3% of that in 1986. There are only 48 sight records of the
species in 146 years of data in the Atlas of Victorian Wildlife."

A short recommendation report with this infromation is available form me
for those interested. Please supply a mailing (Aust. Post) address.
