Hi,

A quick note to say that I was just leaving Melbourne Zoo this afternoon and a medium-sized, long-tailed parakeet flew over and into a tree in the car park next to the main entrance. I didn't have bins on me but went over and stood underneath it close enough to see that it was bright green with a bright pinky-red bill suggesting either Rose-ringed or Alexandrine Parakeet. On size I'd think it was probaby Rose-ringed; it was about the size of a Rosella.

I let a friend at Melbourne Zoo know. I'm not sure if they keep these at all - I don't think they do. If it's escaped from anywhere, it's no real surprise that it would be drawn to the zoo.

This is obviously of some note considering other recent observations of the species elsewhere in Australia (birding-aus passim).

Cheers,

Simon.
