Hi Jade,
This kind of fighting is a very common behaviour among Magpies. If you are interested in Magpies, have a look at the new book:
Jones, Daryl.  Magpie alert: learning to live with a wild neighbour. Sydney: 2002. Octavo, paperback, 157 pp., colour photographs, other illustrations.

Although that is mainly about Magpie attacks on humans.

Philip

Subject: [BIRDING-AUS] Magpie Behaviour

Hi All,

While watching two magpies this morning i noticed the birds doing something
i have never seen magpies do before. The birds were both on their sides
facing each other playing dead and then kicking or pecking but not hearting
each other. Could this behaviour be due to the fact that the original female
had been injured and taken away for care and the male was trying to make
establish himself with another female a month after her being removed from
the territory? Could anyone tell me more about this behaviour and wether it
is common amoung these birds or not?

Yours sincerely
Jade Welch
