Wrestling Friarbirds

On the weekend at a site in the Central Tablelands(near Ilford) there
was quite a bit of bird activity, even though it was very dry. Noisy
Friarbirds were chasing each other constantly, then while walking
through the gully area, we came across 2 of them on the ground and one
of the friarbirds had the other's throat gripped in its bill. They
allowed a very close approach, we basically stumbled across them. They
continued wrestling and grappling each others' bills for several
minutes, long enough to get out my telephoto lens/flash and set up a
tripod and get a few shots. They eventually flew off to continue
chasing each other. Has anyone come across anything like this before?

There was quite a bit bird activity up there, including white throated
gerygones, first time I have seen (or heard )them up there, also a bird
calling fairly constantly from high in the canopy, call basically
described as chirrup-rr. I feel I should know what it is, but couldn't
spot it. The habitat is basically strinybark forest with a shrub
understory, at 1000m altitude.

regards,

Chris Ross
