Have just returned from a trip in NSW.  Leaving Lightning Ridge at 6.30am and turning onto the highway, glimpsed a flock of black birds feeding on the ground.  I nearly ignored them as from a distance assumed they were Dusky Moorhens, but the absence of flicking tails caught my attention.

A quick U-turn, binos and field guide, and I had my first Blacktailed Native Hens all 18 of them.

Also eight brolgas at a wet area south of St George helped with a long drive.  Notable absence in the whole two weeks were finches of any kind, I only saw Redbrowed Firetails once.
