Alan Grennon from the Us joined a couple of locals and I on a trip up to
Clunes last Sunday. We failed to turn up the Painted Honeyeater we've come
to expect in recent years. The country was incredibly dry with trees looking
very distressed (even though there was evidence of rain a couple of days
before) and almost no flower. Birding was difficult, but some highlights did
turn up with White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike, Southern Whiteface, White-browed
Woodswallows and Red-capped Robin. Helen O'Donnell, a local, was surprised
by the presence of the latter, saying that it hadn't been seen in that area
for many years. A Crested Bellbird was heard calling but unable to be
tracked down.
