Hi everyone,
an attempt to keep dogs out of a small number of reserves in the
Willoughby Municipality in northern Sydney looks like developing into
a major controversy.
About 10% of the original bush remains in the municipality and of
this the majority is in small, degraded reserves. These reserves are
important havens for local and visiting fauna.
Dogs on leads are allowed in these reserves but it is planned to stop
this in some of those reserves.
The pro dog group rightly questions what damage do dogs do in
reserves and calls for proof.
Is anyone aware of any studies of dogs in reserves especially, but
not solely, relating to dogs accompanied by people. Is it known, for
instance, whether the presence of dog scent has a detrimental effect
on the birds and other fauna in a reserve?
In a slightly perverse way I should also ask whether there have been
studies on the beneficial effects of dogs in reserves?
Please contact me directly.
Andy
