When one gets compulsive enough as a twitcher
"want" goes out the window. It's definitely a "need".   
  
Needs are defined as "those things without which we
cannot survive".  New birds definitely fit this category. They, to a
twitcher, are not just 'wants", they are essential, just as food and sex
are to some other types of people - you know, like Lorne. 
Conservation, management and research are all very
well, but it's a matter of one's perspective and  priorities, after all,
what is there to life without a new bird to pursue ?
