Hi all,
great day birding out at the You Yangs (north of Geelong, Vic) last
Sunday showed up some interesting things. Highlights were approximately
15-20 Diamond Firetails and 5 Zebra Finches along Sandy Creek Road (north of
the You Yangs, adjacent to the Ford Proving Ground), unfortunately no Hooded
Robins observed in the You Yangs (long shot though). The Diamond Firetails
and Zebra Finches were observed feeding on the east side of the road near a
row of planted trees, and didn't seemed phased by my presence.

Did a quick search on the Atlas of Victorian Wildlife 2000 of the You Yang's
and nearby areas (1-2 kilometre radius). The total number of records for
all of the species mentioned above is as follows:

Diamond Firetail 41 records in total (only 5 post 1995)
Zebra Finch 3 records in total (most recent in 1986)
Hooded Robin 17 records in total (only 2 post 1990, most recent
in 1998)
Both the Diamond Firetail and Hooded Robin are considered threatened in
Victoria and are now listed under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988.

Has there been a noticeable decline of these species in the region, like
many other areas in the state? Other people's thoughts on the lack of
sightings/records would be great.
