Sorry to be negative about your interesting account, but I must put in the following warning.  Camping near bores is inadvisable.  Cattle are quite easily scared, and there is no quicker way of getting cattlemen offside than interfering with their cattle's access to water.
 
Bad luck about the Spinifex Birds.  My experience has been that they are easy find along the Santa Teresa Road, much more so than emu-wrens.

Camped that night by a bore, (nice chap really) hoping that it would be visited by Flock Bronzewing coming in for a drink in the evening or at first light, but apart from some cattle doing their best midnight impersonation of a backpacker killer, nothing came near the bore.
