Gooday all,
Experienced one of those magic moments that makes birding such a rewarding occupation.
Last week I had the opportunity to be in Cairns.
After seeing my wife off on the early flight to TI, Camilla and I went to Cairns Centennial Lakes for a short visit before returning to Bowen.
Out of the corner of my eye I glimpsed a small object dart over the water. Focussing my glasses on a large clump of bamboo type grass I located an adult Little Kingfisher Alcedo pusilla. It proved most obliging as it remained settled for a good couple of minutes allowing me to fully appreciate the birds plumage in the morning light.
To add to this glorious scene the bird darted out and flew past a number of deep carmine coloured water lilies that certainly made the event a magical moment in time.
Had to share the moment with someone so rang a friend and told them what I had just witnessed. On returning to my car a Police Officer was booking a Greenslopes St. speedster nearby. I thought to myself what a great pity that so many people cannot find the time to slow down and enjoy the wonders of our wildlife.
