A national Register of Critical Habitat has been established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

Areas listed under the Register will be made on the recommendations of the Threatened Species Scientific Committee and can be amended as new or additional information becomes available.

The first listings under the Register have been four albatross breeding sites in Tasmania, including Macquarie Island, Albatross Island, The Mewstone and Pedra Branca.
