Hi all,
The Pest Animal Control CRC (Cooperative Research Centre), as part of its
agenda, has been working towards immunocontraceptive means of fox control
for a number of years. The release of foxes into Tasmania is of course
completely contrary to the goals of reducing fox numbers and impact in
Australia, and the CRC's response to the situation was swift. The item
below is copied from todays PAC CRC internal electronic newsletter, which I
thought Birding-Aus members concerned about the fox situation in Tasmania
might be interested in.

Australian Wool Innovation Funding for Tasmanian Fox Incursion Project
Australian Wool Innovation have confirmed that they will provide the Pest
Animal Control CRC with $200,000 to support an immediate land owner
education and training program in fox eradication in Tasmania. The project
will involve Tasmanian woolgrowers adopting best-practice fox detection
methods to allow for detection of foxes. This project is supported by the
Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association and Conservation Volunteers
Australia. Planning for the project has commenced and it is hoped to be run
in the later half of May. They have also clearly indicated initial support
of $450,000 to develop a canid-specific toxin.
Two other industries were approached to support R & D into fox
eradication. They are still considering our proposals.
Any questions about these projects should be directed to Anthony Szell.
