As you likely know, we're working to drum up grass roots support for a
petition to stop or severely limit the trade in wild caught birds, most
of which now end up in the European Union and in Asia. It's our sense
that an on-line petition which collects tens of thousands of signatures
will be highly influential when it comes to changing trade policies in
Europe. Although we're just now launching this campaign, we've already
had over 3500 signatures come in over the interned and collected another
couple of thousand in person. Much of the feedback we get is along the
lines of, "isn't this already illegal?"

In addition to support from within Europe, it may be even more important
to get signatures from the countries around the world where the wild
parrots live. Of course pro-trade people like to portray the traffic as
something that helps the exporting country, when in contrast many in the
exporting countries see the extraction of wildlife as draining away the
natural resources of their wildlands. We now have signatures from over
60 countries, and I'm writing you in hopes that you may know of
opportunities to encourage additional support from parrot range states.
Please consider contacting whatever lists, discussion groups, student
associations, and publications that might be willing to help get the
message out there and generate meaningful support.

The petition is now posted in seven languages: French, Spanish, German,
Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, and English at
http://www.worldparrottrust.org/trade/tradeindex.htm. We'd happily add
languages if you or anyone you know would be willing to do the
translating. It takes about two minutes to sign the petition.

Thank you very much for your consideration and support!

All the best,

Jamie
