Suburban lakes in Perth are surprisingly good for waterbirds. As Frank says,
Herdsman is probably the best, although many others are also excellent.
I grew up close to Lake Gwelup, a small lake a few miles north of Herdsman,
which now has a nice walking trail and boardwalk around it.
It regularly has plenty of Blue-billed Ducks, Musk Duck, all three grebes,
lots of cormorants and many other waterfowl as well. I saw White-bellied
Sea-Eagle there once.

Unfortunately I wasn't interested in birding when I was a kid, but now I
enjoy birding there (and Herdsman) when I visit the parents. The adjacent
bushland is quite good too - my mum was very impressed when I showed her
Rainbow Bee-eaters there.
