Jack asked me to post this message:

Some of you might be interested in a seminar which is to be held at
Cranbourne, south-east of Melbourne, over the weekend of 13-14 April. The
seminar will look at environmental change in Western Port over the past two
hundred years, and is part of a programme of events to commemorate the
arrival of members of Nicholas Baudin's French scientific expedition in
Western Port in April 1802. The French team included scientists
Leschenault, Peron and Leseur, all of whom have various Australian species
named after them, and the expedition collected important information about
the flora, fauna and geography of the areas they traversed. They were the
first Europeans to identify French Island correctly as an island, and they
made peaceful contact with the Bunurong Aboriginal people.

The events, including the seminar, are being planned and organised by a
community-based committee with modest funding support from local and State
government authorities. There will be a number of visiting speakers
(including a French scientist, Francoise Debard, who has made a special
study of the Baudin expedition's data on seals), as well as many expert
local speakers; many of you will know Richard Loyn, who will speak about the
birdlife of Western Port. The seminar registration fee is just $50 for both
days, $40 concession, including morning and afternoon teas and lunch, with
seminar proceedings posted out afterwards for a further $20. I will happily
email a registration form direct to anyone who contacts me and expresses an
interest.

My thanks to Russell for allowing this message to be posted.

Regards,

    Jack Krohn
